Why is my object well designed?

As I chose my object, I looked around my apartment for something that fit what I thought was good design. Something that I used often, that was easy to use, compact, useful, and eye pleasing. I chose a Zippo lighter. As I started drawing it and learning more about design, I come the the conclusion that the fact that it had a simple design, was one of the best characteristics. Simple in the sense that each aspect of the lighter had a purpose. And once the functionality was complete, the designer used the functionality and physical shape of the object itself, be the reason of its great design. It compact and can easily be put into your pocket, stays open when you open it and stays closed when you close it. It is self explanatory and therefore easy to use. Last, but not least, it will last. The basis for it's good design and it's simplicity are the reason it will last. Less breakable parts, Sturdy hard outer shell. Overall, this object may be overlooked as an object that has no design, but i would say, the designer made a very well designed object.
